Background
SynDaver™ Lab's product portfolio includes sophisticated synthetic body parts that replicate human anatomy in unprecedented detail, including individually replaceable muscles, tendons, veins, arteries, organs, and even pathologies such as aneurysms, plaques, tumors, and scar tissue. This technology is used in medical device validation studies, in surgical simulation and clinical task training, and in the development of consumer and military products. Read our FAQ.
History
Our company's simulation products are manufactured from a library of proprietary synthetic human tissues that mimic the properties of both healthy and diseased tissues. Work on this ground breaking technology was initiated by our scientists at the University of Florida in 1991, and by 1993 a series of synthetic human trachea models were being used to replace live animals in the testing of medical device prototypes. Some of these models incorporated living human respiratory epithelium to allow the simulation of cellular adhesion effects, and to this day they are among the most advanced synthetic organ models ever made. Our staff later began developing synthetic vascular tissues, joints, and other organs.
SynDaver™ Labs was founded in 2004 to develop synthetic human tissues for medical device testing, including a series of validated live-tissue replacement products that has greatly reduced live animal testing in the medical device industry. The company markets similar technology for medical education and surgical simulation applications.
Medical Device Testing
The FDA requires simulated use testing for medical products that are intended for use on humans, a mandate that has historically been interpreted by design engineers as a requirement to perform animal studies. However, our firm is dedicated to providing economically viable alternatives to such testing where feasible, and we are actively developing new technologies to satisfy this need. The focus of this effort is to provide the medical device industry with new products to improve test data integrity, enhance device safety, shorten the development cycle, reduce time to market, and minimize risk. These products simultaneously help to increase profit while reducing animal use.
